Lots of spikes of lavender flowers bloom between July and September. The leaves are fragrant when crushed, reminding one of mint and liquorice and can be used as tea or eaten raw.
Ecology:
It's a bee magnet! Lot's of nectar attract butterflies, skippers, hummingbirds and even moths at night. In winter, the seeds feed songbirds.
Growing conditions:
In the wild, purple giant hyssop grows at forest edges, floodplains, along rivers and lakes and also on rocky slopes. Full sun to part sun. It is very adaptable to various soil types and medium to dry soil conditions, and once established, it is drought tolerant.
